If you or someone you care for needs to travel in a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) as a passenger, and have adaptations over and above those needed to simply enter and exit the vehicle, then you may need a bespoke solution. Our Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Grant Programme helps thousands of disabled people every year, however, when talking to our potential beneficiaries it was clear that some people need solutions that are far more complex. Bespoke Passenger Solutions enables us to support people in these cases.
What we offer
Through our Bespoke Passenger Solutions Programme, we currently focus help towards additional adaptations which may be required by the disabled person or carer. These may include but are not limited to:
- Ceiling hoists
- Folding tables or Changing beds
- Stretchers
- Sensory equipment
- Storage for equipment or medication
- Sound dampening
- Interior or exterior lighting
- Perspex screens
- Curtains
Who can apply
Our Bespoke Passenger Solutions Programme is currently prioritising funding towards people who can join the Motability Scheme and will receive the most benefit by using the vehicle on a regular basis.
The cost of these vehicles is high, so to ensure that we are providing grants for maximum benefit, we prioritise funding for disabled people who will find the use of a vehicle essential to support them with one of the following:
- Frequent medical/respite/wellbeing appointments where there is no suitable transportation available
- Attending School or College
- Employment
- Volunteering
Our expert Case Managers and Driving Advisors will need to ask for information about your mobility needs (or if you are applying on behalf of a dependent, the disabled persons), to ensure the WAV and any adaptations we fund are right. Using the information that provided, our Case Managers will carefully consider the individual circumstances, and where an application includes financial help with an Advance Payment, your grant award letter will include a list of suitable WAV that the charity is prepared to fund.
All grant applications are means-tested to ensure we support those most in need of financial help and so that we can help as many beneficiaries as possible with the charitable funds available. We will look at your financial situation, including household income and savings, and if we believe you are able to afford to make a contribution towards the vehicle yourself, we may make this a condition of your grant award.
We are not able to award a grant if you have already ordered your vehicle. This is because when you place an application for a grant, our Case Managers will consider your individual circumstances and confirm which vehicles the charity is prepared to fund based on your mobility needs, not wants.
Grants are awarded in line with our policies and following thorough consideration of the information submitted in the application. All grant awards are final, except in cases where additional compelling information is provided. Applications that we consider do not meet our funding priorities will not receive grant-funding.
